I am writing to you because I believe there is a serious problem with our US family courts
and reforms to the system are desperately needed. While nearly everyone is aware of the high
divorce rates in this country, it is frequently overlooked that divorce is the fifth
leading cause of bankruptcy for American families and the system of laws in place in
the family courts has fostered a $50 billion a year industry benefitting the family
courts to the detriment of families in all 50 states. Every year 2 million
Americans are impacted by divorce and a significant number of them are devastated
financially and emotionally because of the incentives to continuously litigate divorce
that currently exist in our family courts.

Specifically, I believe we need to stop litigating divorce and reform the laws that currently encourage
divorcing couples to fight over child custody and property. Instead reforms need to be enacted that
simplify the divorce process and promote common sense solutions:

1. Child custody should be shared equally by both parents in the absence of any criminal
   behavior by either parent.


2. Child support should be a standardized amount based on the cost of living in the county where the child lives.


3. Marital assets should be divided equally and these matters should be handled by an accountant rather
   than in a courtroom.

I urge you to watch the documentary Divorce Corp to better understand the financial and emotional toll the dysfunction of the family courts wages on the American economy and society.

Through years of extensive research and interviews with the country’s top divorce lawyers, mediators, judges, politicians, litigants and journalists, a bittersweet story of the unnecessary turmoil waged on the American family has emerged. Revisions to the existing family court laws must be implemented in order to reverse the dire consequences that annihilate honest, well-intentioned citizens and catalyze irreversible destruction to families. Recent polls, such as those referenced below, are a direct result of Americans seeking reform and recourse from a system thin on justice.

Children, parents, grandparents and extended families are destroyed due to the nation’s archaic, antiquated family courts. Laws governing divorce, custody, and child support have inherent conflicts of interest; financial incentives to enfranchise the family law community and minimize parental rights frustrate a speedy and diplomatic resolution.
Motored by the unilateral decision making of a judge with no jury, families are broken and children are burdened by a judicial system that lacks accountability and oversight- at what physical, emotional, financial, and mental cost to the American public?

Family law reform is essential for the health and welfare of Americans. A need for laws to adapt to modern American social trends & technological advancements is imperative in order to nurture the shift in modern family roles and structures.
